Tire Safety and Maintenance

by Reliable Transmissions on 02/23/15

When it comes to tire pressure, you want to aim for a happy medium. Over-inflated tires ride roughly and wear prematurely at the center of their tread. Under-inflated tires decrease fuel economy, cause imprecise handling, wear prematurely at the edge of their treads, and can overheat and fail at highway speeds.

Here are some helpful tips for tire safety and maintenance:

  • Check your vehicle's tire pressures at least once a month, because tires typically lose about one pound of pressure per month through normal seepage.
  • For the most accurate reading, check tire pressures when the tires are cold.
  • Always follow the inflation pressure recommendations in your vehicle owner's manual or on the tire information label located in the glove box or on the driver's door jamb.
  • Tires lose (in cold weather) and gain (in warm weather) about a pound of pressure with every 10 degree change in temperature.
Not sure if your tires have the correct amount of pressure? Stop by Reliable Transmissions in North Austin or South Austin and let us take a look for you. We want to ensure you are driving safe on the road.

What Does a Check Engine Light Mean to You?

by Reliable Transmissions on 07/31/13

If your check engine light is illuminated, it's best to take it in for diagnostic testing at an auto repair or transmission repair shop. Because while the lights vary in appearance from vehicle to vehicle, all have the same basic meaning: There's a problem with the way your car is running.

The check engine light is part of your vehicle's onboard diagnostics system. Computers have control and monitor vehicle performance, regulating such variables as engine speed (RPM), fuel mixture, and ignition timing, and even tell the automatic transmission when to shift.

When the electronic-control system finds a problem it cannot adjust, the computer turns on a yellow warning indicator and stores a trouble code in its memory. These diagnostic trouble codes help identify the probable source of the problem, such as a malfunctioning sensor or a misfiring engine and can be read with a scan tool or diagnostic computer. Vehicle manufacturers originally used the onboard diagnostics system to help technicians pinpoint and troubleshoot malfunctions.

Continuing to drive your vehicle with the check engine light on without having your vehicle inspected could lead to major damage to your vehicle, and even leave you stranded. It is vital that you bring your car to a repair shop to have your computer scanned. At Reliable Transmissions, we offer this service to our customers for free in order to help them gain more information on what may be wrong with their vehicle.

Signs It's Time to Replace Your Brakes

by Reliable Transmissions on 07/30/13

Here are some signs of brake problems. If you experience any of these, you should call Reliable Transmissions today to schedule an appointment to replace your brakes:

Reduced responsiveness or fading:

If your brakes are not as responsive as they should be or if the pedal "sinks" toward the floor, this could be an indication of a leak in the braking system. It could be an air leak (in the brake hose) or a brake fluid leak. One telltale sign of a brake fluid leak is the presence of a small puddle of fluid when the car is parked. Brake fluid looks similar to fresh motor oil, but with a less "slimy" texture.

Pulling:

If your vehicle "pulls" to one side while braking, it may be a sign that the brake linings are wearing unevenly or that there is foreign matter in the brake fluid. Your vehicle may need a brake adjustment or to have the fluid drained and replaced.

Grinding or growling:

This loud metallic sound means that you have worn down the pads completely, most likely beyond replacement. The grinding or growling noise is caused by the two pieces of metal (the disc and the caliper) rubbing together. This can "score," or scratch your rotors, creating an uneven surface. If this happens, do not be surprised if your mechanic tells you that the rotors need to be "turned" (a process that evens out the rotor surface), or even replaced.

Vibration:

A vibration or pulsating brake pedal is often a symptom of warped rotors (but can also indicate that your vehicle is out of alignment). The vibration can feel similar to the feedback in the brake pedal during a panic stop in a vehicle equipped with anti-lock brakes.

It is a sign of warped rotors if the vibration occurs during braking situations when the anti-lock brakes are not engaged. Warped rotors are caused by severe braking for long periods, such as when driving down a steep mountain or when towing. Tremendous amounts of friction are created under these conditions, heating up the rotors and causing them to warp. The vibration is felt because the brake pads are not able to grab the surface evenly. If you drive in these conditions, make sure to stop periodically to allow your brakes to cool off.

For many owners, maintaining the vehicle's brakes is something that is often overlooked. But keeping your brakes properly calibrated and in good working order can prevent costly repairs down the line, and, more importantly, help you avoid a collision.

Transmission Failure Warning Signs

by Reliable Transmissions on 07/26/13

1. Check Engine Light: A lit up check engine light on your dashboard can indicate a variety of car issues, both minor and serious. But make sure a local technician takes a look in case the source of the problem is imperative.

2. Refusal to Switch Gears: If your vehicle refuses or struggles to change gears, such as it won’t go into reverse, you’re more than likely face a problem with your transmission. Low transmission fluid or the wrong kind of transmission fluid is oftentimes to blame in this situation.

3. Leaking Fluid: Leaking transmission fluid is one of the easiest transmission problems to identify. If you notice a red, sweet-smelling fluid underneath your car in the garage or in a parking lot, let your mechanic know they need to check the transmission fluid level.

4. Burning Smell: When you notice a burning smell coming from your car, visit an auto repair shop right away. This odor is often an indication that your transmission is overheating or the transmission fluid is old and burning.

5. Neutral Noises: Weird noises coming from your vehicle when your car is in neutral is a sure sign of transmission trouble. At best, the noises might indicate that your car is ready for new transmission oil, or it could also mean that your car requires a costly part replacement due to mechanical wear.

6. Slipping Gears: Not only is it scary and alarming if your gears impulsively slip in and out of place while you’re driving, this scenario is also highly dangerous while you’re on the road. If your gears slip, make sure to let your auto or transmission repair mechanic take a look.

7. Dragging Clutch: A dragging clutch fails to disengage the clutch disk from the flywheel in your vehicle when you press the clutch pedal.

8. Grinding or Shaking: More common in a car with an automatic transmission, a grinding or shaking that occurs when the gears change is often a sure indication that your transmission has a problem.

9. Humming Sounds: Humming, whining, or clunking noises – none are good sounds to hear in your car. Let a local auto repair or transmission repair mechanic take a look.

10. Unresponsive: If your car doesn't respond when you attempt to change gears – especially from park to drive – it’s most likely caused by a problem with your transmission.

Ways to Save on Gas This Summer

by Reliable Transmissions on 07/09/13

Gas prices typically rise during the summer months due to increase in demand, so get the most out of your gas with these money saving tips from Reliable Transmissions

  1. Fill your tank when it’s cool outside, in the morning or evening. Gasoline is more dense when it’s cool, giving you more bang for your buck!
  2. If you have a smart phone, consider using an app that identifies nearby gas prices, so you can choose the best price before you get to the pump.
  3. Empty out your trunk or bed of unnecessary items. A lighter vehicle will get better gas mileage.
  4. Keep your tires at their proper inflation. This will reduce tire friction and improve gas mileage.

What is a Transmission?

by Reliable Transmissions on 07/09/13

The transmission is a mechanical component designed to transmit power from a vehicle’s engine to the drive axle, which makes the wheels drive the vehicle.

Your car’s transmission is the most complicated and least understood major component in your car or truck. In today’s cars, the transmission is a combination of sophisticated hydraulics and computer-controlled electronic components.

By varying the gear ratio, the transmission alters the levels of power and speed to the wheels. For example, in low ranges, the transmission provides more power and less speed; in high ranges, just the opposite is true. This reduces the load on the engine, while increasing the vehicle’s speed and fuel economy.
